Ease of use

Whatever level of experience you’re bringing to a new website, ease-of-use will be an important point of comparison. However, that’s especially the case if you don’t have any experience or expertise at all.

Wix and GoDaddy operate along broadly the same range of basic principles. Each builder allows you to build a site from scratch using a combination of drag-and-drop editing tools, and tools built into your website dashboard.

If you’re coming at website building as a complete beginner, you can feel confident that you’ll get along fine with either GoDaddy or Wix.

For us, Wix is a slightly easier-to–use option overall, beating out Wix and every other website builder we’ve tested. While GoDaddy isn’t going to cause any massive issues that users will struggle to get past, if ease-of-use is your number one priority, then we’d recommend going for Wix.

Price

When it comes to comparing website builders on price, it’s important to bear in mind what features you need.

If you’re just looking for the cheapest plan overall, then GoDaddy is the winner. Its Basic plan is just £6.99/month, compared to Wix’s £9 Light plan.

Each of these plans offers a range of basic tools and features that will help you get a fully functional website online for others to see. However, it is important to note some differences.

If you’re planning to build a site and drive traffic organically – i.e. through SEO – then you’ll need to opt for GoDaddy’s Standard plan at £8.99/month. Wix offers basic SEO on its basic plan, meaning there’s very little price difference.

Likewise, if you want to sell online, you’ll need to choose a plan that allows ecommerce activity. Wix’s cheapest ecommerce-enabled plan is £16 per month, compared to £12.99 per month with GoDaddy.

If you want the brand offering the lowest price, GoDaddy wins. It’s very close for its basic SEO-enabled plans, with a slightly wider gap when it comes to selling online.

Templates are one of the most important features of any website builder. They are the foundation of any and every website.

If we’re just comparing the total number of templates on offer, Wix is the winner, with over 500 designer-made templates available on its platform. Whatever industry you work in or audience you plan to target, you’re going to find a template that works for you.

GoDaddy, on the other hand, offers a smaller number of templates, with just over 200 designer-made options to pick from. While you’re still very likely to find a template or theme that suits your brand needs, the smaller range may mean that you need to do more customisation to get a website that looks exactly the way you want.

With either brand, you can feel confident that the template you choose will work well online. It will be mobile-friendly and responsive, meaning you don’t need to worry too much about how it looks and operates for your users.

SEO

Similar to other website builders, Wix has an in-built SEO tab within its dashboard. Within the SEO dashboard, website owners have access to an easy-to-use platform that offers clear guides on how to get their website started, as well as providing actions to complete or follow up on post-launch.

The setup checklist from Wix is particularly useful, as it walks you through the basic SEO steps you need to follow in order to get your site running effectively. It also allows you to select the keywords you care most about to help with optimisation.

Once you’ve completed the initial setup, you’ll be provided with a series of actions to complete. These actions cover everything from creating pages on your site, adding text or images, or more technical tasks, such as connecting your site to Google Analytics.

Wix also provides explainers for the actions you’re completing, to help you understand what the goal is and why it matters.

With GoDaddy, your SEO dashboard sits within the wider Marketing space. It’s worth noting too that, with GoDaddy, SEO tools are not available on the most basic plan.

Like Wix, the first stage with GoDaddy is an SEO setup that guides you through the process of setting up your site for search engines.

You’ll select where your users are located and what sort of site you’re running. GoDaddy allows you to select a primary goal and secondary goal and then GoDaddy will build bespoke suggestions based on your approach.

As you progress, you’ll begin to choose page titles for your home and other pages, along with age descriptions and other key features. You can continue to edit once you’ve completed your initial setup.

Both brands offer a robust SEO dashboard that can help personal and small business websites perform well in the search engines. Broadly, you are given access to the same range of tools and features though, for us, Wix provides a smoother experience.

Ecommerce

With Wix, you can begin to access basic ecommerce features if you opt for the Core plan, at £16 per month.

All of the ecommerce plans from Wix allow you to accept payments for products, plans or subscriptions. The plans also allow you to sell on marketplaces and via social media channels.

You can add up to 50,000 products to your Wix ecommerce site, including variations of single products. This means that if you’re selling a product in five different sizes, for example, you’ll be using up five product spaces.

Of course, for the majority of small businesses, 50,000 products is more than enough.

Wix’s ecommerce plans also included abandoned cart functionality as standard. This powerful tool can help you to re-engage lost clients and is often a paid extra with other platforms.

If you upgrade to Wix Business, costing £20/month, or Business Elite, costing £119/month, you’ll gain access to even more advanced features. If you need to support multiple currencies, for example, you’ll need to opt for one of these plans.

GoDaddy only offers ecommerce functionality on its highest-tier Ecommerce plan, costing £12.99 per month.

With GoDaddy Ecommerce, you get access to all of the Premium features from the cheaper plans along with the ability to list products, with flexible payment and shipping options. You can also begin to offer discounts and use promo codes.

GoDaddy Ecommerce allows users to list up to 5,000 products, with up to 10 images allowed per product. You’re also able to sell a range of products, from physical goods to services and digital listings.

With GoDaddy, you also have support for social media selling and can link your site to a range of the most popular platforms. Additionally, you can make choices on how shipping is handled for your online store, choosing either flat rate costs, or costs based on weight, for example.
