Jimdo offers a very good range of professionally designed templates to choose from, though fewer than some competitors, and is also one of the few website builders we’ve compared that offers a completely free plan, though this may not offer enough functionality for some users.

Jimdo website builder: Overview

Jimdo is a well-known website builder that has been designed to be simple and easy to use. It also offers a range of features and tools that can help individuals and businesses to operate online with the functions they require.

Jimdo is also one of the few website builders we’ve compared to offer a free plan, the Play plan. While this might be a good option if you want to try your hand at website building, it may not offer the full range of tools that you need.

Including the free plan, Jimdo offers five main plans. The cheapest of these, the Start plan, is £9/month. While this is not the cheapest plan we’ve compared, it is reasonably priced.

Among the plans from Jimdo there is one, the Grow Legal plan, designed to suit legal professionals. It costs £20/month.

While it may be a less-known website builder than some competitors, such as Wix or GoDaddy, Jimdo is one of the options available that provides a Free plan. While the basic plan does not offer all of the functions you might need to run a professional website, it does give you an easy way to test things out and build a basic website before you commit to spending a monthly fee.

Of course, to gain access to the tools you’ll need to make your site work as effectively as possible – things like basic SEO tools and analytics – you’ll need to pay. Unfortunately, to gain access to these tools you’ll be looking to spend slightly more with Jimdo, at £15 per month for the Grow plan, than you would be with other builders. For comparison, with Wix you’d be looking to spend £14 per month for the same level of support.

Whether this extra cost is worth it for you will depend largely on how much you like using Jimdo.

Ease of use

Jimdo offers around 100 professionally designed templates for you to choose from, making it easy to get a website online quickly and easily.

As standard, Jimdo’s templates are mobile-friendly and come with a range of features that can help you succeed online. You also get access to an image library, with the option to add features like contact forms to your website easily.

When it comes to building your site, Jimdo makes things very easy. When you first begin your sign up process, you’ll answer a series of questions about your new website, including what sort of site it is, what industry you work in, etc. Once you answer these questions, Jimdo will automatically create a template for you to start working with. You can see a few examples of this process in the screenshots above.

Once your template has been created by Jimdo, you can then begin editing any feature or element that you want to edit. This is easy to do, and can make testing different elements and layouts incredibly easy. However, at times the editor is less intuitive than some editors. This becomes less of an issue the more you use the builder, but may be a factor for those people who are not expecting to work on their site too frequently.

It is worth mentioning that Jimdo offers fewer options in their website builder compared to other providers, including Wix and Squarespace.

Social media integration, for example, may have to be completed using third-party tools, which could be a frustration for users hoping to have everything managed from one location.

Design and templates

With over 100 professionally designed templates on offer from Jimdo, there is a good chance that you’ll be able to find exactly what you need to get your site started. However, other providers do offer more so if you’re looking for as much flexibility as possible when you’re starting out, you might want to look elsewhere. However, like other builders, Jimdo does allow you to customise your template with a drag-and-drop editing tool. It also offers an image library, that can massively simplify the process of sourcing images for your pages and posts.

Ecommerce functionality

Jimdo offers a basic store editor that can be built in the same way as a non-ecommerce store. You’ll be asked a series of questions about your new website and the platform will automatically generate a template for you to begin working from.

At this stage, you can then begin adding a storefront and products for customers to access.

Jimdo’s ecommerce editor is as easy to use as the non-ecommerce equivalent, though it does feel less comprehensive than online selling platforms from other brands. If you’re intention is launch a pure ecommerce store, then you’ll probably be better off with one of the other builders on the market.

While Jimdo isn’t the most expensive ecommmerce option, it also isn’t the cheapest. For the level of tooling you get, you’re probably going to be better off with a brand like Shopify or Wix, if you want a less specialist platform.

Tools

Jimdo offers a range of tools, though fewer than a number of competitors.

In particular, it is let down by the lack of integrations that it offers. Whereas other brands allow you to integrate email marketing and social media accounts, Jimdo does not. This may make it a less attractive choice for some.

However, Jimdo does offer some pre-built integrations that might be useful. You can quickly and easily add blocks to your content to contect to apps like Airbnb or Calendly.

Jimdo does also offer SEO tools that can help you to appear on search engines, such as Google and so, if you’re plan is to launch a simple site to advertise your business, this may be a good choice. Bear in mind though, that you’ll need to opt for the Grow plan for access to this.

Likewise, a couple of Jimdo’s plans are designed to allow you to include legal text which is customisable and GDPR compliant. For many businesses, this could be a big benefit.

Jimdo has an overall Trustpilot score of 4.1, with 73% of all ratings being 5-star.

Several users highlighted the ease of use and customer support in their reviews. It’s worth mentioning that Jimdo’s rating is higher than many of its competitors, though we suggest taking Trustpilot scores with a pinch of salt.
